Crowning Glory

“How do I look?”

Harold admired himself in the mirror one more time and turned to Jasfoup.

“You look like a complete prat,” said the demon amiably, flicking through the pages of Woman’s Own. “Y-front’s never came into fashion, let alone went out.”

“I don’t mean my underwear,” said Harold. “I meant my new tricorn hat. Do you like it?”

“I like the hat, yes.” Jasfoup raised an eyebrow. “It’s certainly more suitable than the one you were wearing last year.”

“That was an authentic 1976 pleather cowboy hat,” Harold said, disguising his hurt. “The e-bay seller told me so.”

Eight random things

I've been tagged by Nichola! Here are the rules as posted by Turning Pages:

1. Each player starts with 8 random facts/habits about themselves.
2. People who are tagged, write a blog post about their own 8 random things, and post these rules.
3. At the end of your post you need to tag 8 people and include their names.
4. Don’t forget to leave them a comment and tell them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.

So here are my eight random things...

1. I study Italian Rapier combat with the Society for they Study of Swordsmanship, so if you come at me with a sword I'll know what to do.

2. As a child, my main interest was reading. I would happily read half a dozen books a day. Enid Blyton, Agatha Christie, Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators, Tolkien...

3. I was a punk rocker in the seventies. Black mohican and shaved sides, Siouxsie make up, the lot.

4. My mother died when I was fourteen.

5. At six, I was commended by the local fire brigade for putting out a brush fire (I didn't start it).

6. Conversely, I once set fire (accidentally) to Wolverhampton University.

7. I have a degree in Fine Art. The house is full of my paintings.

8. I was raised Catholic, until I was old enough to point out the inconsistencies in the Bible.

These are things that occupy the dark recesses.. I tag Peg, NovelGirl, Lesley Cookman, Sheepish, Liz, Caroline, Bernadine, and Zinnia. Please don't sue me!

“Jasfoup!” Harold’s temper was palpable. “Gillian tells me that you’ve been dealing in drugs. That’s despicable, even for a demon.”

“Me?” Jasfoup put down his tea, looking hurt. “The only drugs I deal with are caffeine and the occasional cigar.”

“What about the acid you’ve been handing out free to the drug pushers?”

Jasfoup looked uncomfortable. “I do tell them it’s very dangerous first,” he said, “and I advise them to flush it down their drains. I can’t help it if they imbibe it.”

“But still… LSD .” Harold shook his head. “You shouldn’t.”

“Not LSD acid, Harold. Sulphuric acid.”

“Have you had an accident?” Jasfoup tried not to laugh at the sight of Harold’s hair. “You look like you’ve been dragged through a bush backwards.”

Harold scowled. “It’s that new conditioner you bought. It’s left my hair sticking up all over the place.”

“What conditioner?” Jasfoup’s brow creased. “I haven’t bought conditioner.”

It was Harold’s turn to frown. “Yes you did. It’s in a long bottle without a label. I certainly didn’t buy it.”

“A bottle with a long, thin neck?” Jasfoup coughed. “That’s not shampoo,” he said. “That was what I was using to artificially inseminate the cattle.”

“Why aren’t there any dragons?” Harold looked up from his book on mythological creatures, wondering whether to mark it as fiction since he’d met so many of those depicted.

Jasfoup shrugged. “They were hunted to extinction,” he said. “The last one on this plane died in 1374.”

“Are there still some on other planes?”

“Oh yes.” Jasfoup smiled. “There are several on the Elven plane and at least two on the Faery one. There’s more in Hell.”

“Why hunt such beautiful creatures?” Harold asked. “Are they really that dangerous?”

The demon shrugged. “Not really,” he said. “But they are delicious.”

Model Citizens

Harold raised an eyebrow as Gillian came upstairs*, ready to go out. “Are you wearing that?” he said. “It’s a bit of a plunging neckline, isn’t it?”

“I’m a vampire, Harold. I have certain appearances to keep up. Where do think the noun ‘vamp’ came from?” She looked down at her cleavage. “Too revealing?”

“Too much?” Harold grinned. “Don’t stand next to anyone sitting down; you’ll have their eyes out.”

“Do you want me to change?”

“No! One look at you and the Tories will repeal the obscenity laws.”

*The equivalent of ‘coming downstairs’ if you live in a crypt.

First draft finished.

Only a thousand words of epilogue to tie it all together. I'll now return to book 5 and leave this for a month before editing.

Last Chapter.

Well, sort of. It turns out that I still need an epilogue, even though I've tied up a lot of loose ends.

Everyone is healing, except Felicia, who has to have her cauterised wound cut open. Midnight gets the last bus to Heaven

Penultimate chapter.

It was a cliche. Just as you thought the whole plot was over and the characters are chatting on their way home there comes the shocker. The last angel attacks, cutting Harold in half and disabling Felicia and Gillian.

Just for good measure, in the time-honoured tradition of Scoobie-doo, he goes over his plans for greathood, crowing over Julies imminent demise.

But what's this? Remember in chapter 5 Felicia said 'What good are ghosts'? Now we see. They save Julie and the ghost of her dragon-son dispatches Raphael.

Harold got better.

Negotiations with Angels

Another chapter.

A solution found: Harold and Felicia negotiate with Midnight. There are at least two chapters left to write.

Death of an Angel.

Discorporation, anyway.

I shall miss Sariel. He was an interesting character that didn't really deserve his fate despite killing Jasfoup's child.

I shall take a weekend break from NC, as I have a couple of short stories to write for which the deadlines are tomorrow.

Three short chapters today.

I'm becoming very conscious of the word count. I planned for 120K with the idea that I would edit down to 100K Now it looks to being even bigger and I'm having to think about cutting more out.

Of Wolves and Angels

Back from holiday - it was lovely, thank you - and after a couple of horrible days back sorting things out I'm back to writing again.

Chapter 53 sees Felicia and Gillian saving a newly-created nephilim from Puriel.

Good news, I may have a book published this year. "An Ungodly Child" won the Undiscovered Authors regional round. It depends upon the contract whether I accept the £1000 prize and publication.
