Size of a Wolf

Does anyone remember the animated 'Arabian Nights' from the 70s? I think it was bundled with 'The Banana Splits'. The only bit I can remember about it is the guy that could shapeshift and the stupid donkey. How I wanted to be him.

I think that's why I enjoy writing Felicia so much. She's the first were that I've really grown to love, and coupled with the vivacious Gillian (vampire) makes for some erotic scening.

They escaped the angel and the police today, and Gillian taught Felicia how to shapeshift on command. There was angst.

When blinded by an angel: Wear shades.

Zokotour word meters are back

From Neil Gaiman: Susanna Clark's "The Dweller in High Places"

The writing went well today, though I covered Felicia explaing her loupishness to Meinwen a little fast. I may have to expand on that.

2K today, plus a couple of odd bits for later in the story.

Fire and Flood

It was difficult to write today. Guests left over from the weekend and daughter off school (thus TV on) meant that everyone crowded into the study. Writing was therefore extremely difficult and I'd only written 300 words by 2PM, the normal time when I've written my daily target of 2K.

Still when everyone went out I got some work done, finishing the chapter a little before 6:00.

Patricia dies. Twice. Once mortally and the her soul is taken.

We're Going Through Changes

Felicia visits her mum again and endures the criticism then takes her, despite her not wanting to go, to the hospital to see Julie.

Patricia (her mum) slaps her and makes Felicia angry. Colour fades from the world and Felicia sees the changed. This includes her mother, who, under the thick application of Ester Lauder, has scales.

As does the small demon sitting on her sister's shoulder.

Hard Slog

Harder going today.

Chapter 7 is a 'fill in' chapter while Felicia tries to work out what's wrong. She sees things. She gets dizzy. Her eyesight improves.

Harold and Jasfoup know that she's been changed, but how? Just from one little scratch? Impossible! Unless...

How much is that Goblin in the sink?

My plans for world domination the book plot are being undermined as I am forced to split notes I had for one chapter into two (length, change of subject). With any luck I can eat up some of the later chapters to get it back on track.

Felicia continues to change, still unaware of her ailment. Jasfoup insists on taking her to the hospital, although he knows all to well what's wrong with her.

Fencing stops play

A slow but productive day today. Chapter 4 slotted in with minor adjustments from the last version, which left me filling in chapter 3 with Felicia's mother. What a cow she is. Also another scene with the mysterious Raffles.

Then I went out to sword class. What fun, and a new scar to boot!

Chapter two down (2K)

Felicia talks with Jasfoup and then visits her blind sister in the psychiatric hospital.

Why is she there? She talks to invisible people. Her mother disowned her.

Version 3

I'm off again!

Have spent the entire weekend re-plotting Beasts and Angels, I've started a third re-write, this time with Felicia the sole protagonist and the angel Raphael as the antagonist (Puriel is still in it, as is Gillian. Harold and Jasfoup and Meinwen are supporting cast).

If I can sell this one (and to judge by Amazon, Werewolf / Vampire novels are the new Witchcraft School) it'll be a lead in for the the Harold and Jasfoup, the Meinwen and the Lucifer novels.

A Plot, Holmes!

More plotting today, and a return to 'Beasts and Angels'. Combining the old plot with a the new one provides a workable solution that requires only a 50% re-write so I'm a little happier with it today.

I was busy in the afternoon, so only a short Gillian/Felicia flash written.

Don't Panic, Mr. Mainwaring

Alas, I'm not Arthur Lowe. Or perhaps fortunately, since he's dead now. I have, however, panicked all day, trying to come up with a new plot for the Felicia book.

Why should I, I hear you ask. That's a good question. I can't separate Harold From Beasts and Angels. To make Felicia more proactive, I need to replace many of Harold's scenes with her's, which would fundamentally alter the whole of the H&J series.

I came up with a new plot, but it's weak as yet. I need two or three subplots to beef it up. How do you have a vampire and a werewolf as lovers without rehashing the whole Romeo and Juliet theme? That's been done to death, even if mine are lesbians.

Wrote two flashes, edited a third and sent it off to the Flash Me! competition.

Put Your Pens Down

I got an e-mail from the agent. She sort-of likes it, but wants it far more Felicia-centric, with werewolf angst. She'll send me some thoughts for next week about what she's looking for. Meanwhile, I need to think of a new plot. Let's say 60 2K chapters with three interlocking stories. I can write that from scratch in a little under 2 months if I plot it in detail.

Hmm. "Samiel's Child" hasn't been taken, nor has "Sally's Child"
(Samiel and Sariel are both Fallen Angels). Alas, "Lilith's Child" has.

So... I will take the weekend off from writing and plot instead.

This one was a bit of a backwater; noting to progress the story at all. Just a quick tour round Brimmington Manor and Gillian teaching Felicia to shapeshift.

Double Murder

Felicia is introduced to her future lover (though neither of them know it yet) while recovering from witnessing a murder. Melissa, however, is more concerned with committing her second.

Why was the flayed skin still moving? Any why did Harold lie about the way a werewolf could be killed?

Final Death

Another day, another chapter. Chapter 10 saw Felicia thrust into witnessing a murder and Gillian waking, exercising and going after her. Sounds tedious but it was actually quite exciting, IMO.

Also a short flash sketching out Gillian's death which, posted privately to a few select people who read my LJ, has already caused hate mail. How cool is that? My characters are so loved that I get hate mail when I kill them. Unbeknownst to the readers, her vampire soul is released by an act of great self-sacrifice so that when Harold brings her back (and he will) he prevents her from receiving redemption. Boy, is she pissed!

Time travel.

A tricky business, time travel. It makes an imp very hungry. I think I spend more time working out how to arrange a linear plot than it does to write the thing.

Still, another 4K chapter today, and a plot hook from chapter 3 resolved. The story progresses, though all Heaven breaks loose in a chapter or two; there's nothing like a teed-off cherub to annoy a demon.

Almost nothing today.

Well, it was my monthly 6-hour sword class learning rapier, saber and cutlass. Now you know why there's a sword fight in every book. The trick is to dumb them down for the readers and going back over the incredibly detailed fights in some of the books, I can see why. Nobody needs to know that the hero parried in fifth then performed a passato solto to kill his opponent; they want to know that he blocked the baddie's sword, sidestepped to the left and rammed six inches of Toledo steel down his throat.

A few words written when I got back, but as I don't know where in the book they come (it's a scene where Gillian cuts out Felicia's burned flesh so that she can heal properly) I won't include the wordage.

Toy Ghosts

Faltered a little today.

It took me all day to figure out how to integrate the Felicia and Susan story lines. I got there in the end but it was a struggle. The time line has changed in the re-write, too.

Instead of integrating the Avenging Angel story line I've kept it separate in a series of interludes between chapters. Short pieces, almost flashes as we see the victims chosen and the Fire of God dispatched.

A little fun today with the young lad, who is a ghost, playing with a ghost dog, and my theory that anything, sufficiently loved, can retain its spirit after death, even a toy horse.

Wordblind

It might be ankle-high snow outside but I'm wordblind indoors. I added 5K to Beasts and angels and then had an Epiphany about the roles of the two central female characters. I was struggling to fit them both into the story, so I've merged them both into one character (Felicia, obviously). This necessitated a re-edit of the book so far which has taken me ten hours. I had to do it twice but it's a LOT tighter now and I've very pleased with it.

I lost 4K in the edits. It was worth it.

Linear Time

Another chapter of Beasts and Angels today.

Now, I know that I'm supposed to be rewriting it in a linear time frame, but what does that mean, exactly?

Do I write on character's viewpoint and stick with her through the book, or do I move to different scenes to build up the other characters? If X is happening at the same time as Y, but both happen before Z, do I put in X, then Y, then Z? Or X and Z and go back to Y later

For example. Felicia has to find the address of the wolf that bit her. Harold has to conspire with Susan while she's away , and Jasfoup throttles an imp while all three are gone, but after that, Harold calls Felicia to meet them (It a good job Felicia is human most of the time; using a mobile phone with paws is nigh-on impossible. Just ask my dog.)

A break from writing tonight for rapier class, and some happy 8PPS and void practice, followed by full sparring and bulldog with swords.

Chapter Four

Another slog today, and a massive effort or re-write for chapter four. Mostly new words, since none of the old ones were any good. I kept a few: 'and' and 'but' are always useful but most were environmentally recycled.

Felicia now knows that she's a werewolf, Harold and Jasfoup have met Dai, the Welsh angel of death, and offered him tea. Perhaps bara brith would have been a better idea.

Wrote a couple of flashes, too.

Mayhem Sunday.

I got up early(ish) to work. I need to write 4K every day to meet this deadline and despite this being the Imbolc gathering at the house (small this time, only 30 people plus kids) I still needed to write.

I'd managed 1K by mid-day and the noise levels were getting to me, so I borrowed a laptop off one of the wyves, copied my docs to a memory stick and went upstairs. The animals were pleased: I had a dog at each of two corners, me at a third and the cat at the fourth.

Well, I hate laptops - too cramped and my fingers don't drop onto the right keys, and no mouse means I spend too much time fiddling with the cursor - so I managed another 2K in three hours then came back downstairs, kicked five kids out of the study and wrote the last 1000.

Chapter 3 done and half of chapter 4.

Re-write

Nothing on Chill of the Road today, but lots of work on Beasts and Angels. I'm reworking the original into a more linear form, and while its a little less exciting, I hope that it will engage the reader more easily than the fire and fury of the original draft.

After a break, I also wrote a 1000 word short for a competition.

Nil words again.

I've spent the day alternatively panicking and re-plotting "Beasts and Angels" under the guidance of the agent who has shown some interest in it. She is quite encouraging and I'm filled with enthusiasm.

I have a rough outline of the revised work, and I've begun to piece it together. I've promised her 100 pages by next Friday (8 days). An achievable target, I think.
